口译笔译：pull carpet out 从脚下抽走地毯

有这样一句话：“I felt myself falling to the ground as if some one had pulled carpet out from under me.”若按字面意思译，全句就是“我不由自主地跌倒了，就好像有人从我脚下抽走了地毯。”这是什么意思呢？令人不知所云。在汉语中，地毯和跌倒没什么关联，何况跌倒的地方怎么一定会有地毯呢？其实此话的词义就是两腿突然不听使，站不稳了，可译成“我突然感到两腿发软，跌倒在地。”
　　Pulled carpet out from under somebody是英语习惯用法，可能与英美人士好用地毯有关，一般家庭和办公地点都铺着，踩在脚下的地毯突然被人抽出，当然要摔跟头了。
　　要是有什么秘密想藏着掖着，最自然的地方也是地毯，譬如：I know what you did, you can't sweep things under the carpet. (我知道你干了什么，你瞒不住我。) sweep something under the carpet就是隐藏秘密的意思。
　　同样，The child will be on the carpet 的意思就是“这孩子得挨训了”，因为挨训时都站在地毯上。
　　Carpet 自然也有好意，如：roll out the red carpet for the President.就是指“隆重欢迎总统的到来”。
