We're taking lots of Kendal mint cake.

　　Granville: I've almost finished the preparations for our expedition.
　　Hector: Where are you planning to go?
　　Granville: We're going to spend two weeks in northern Norway.
　　Hector: That's pretty tough country. You'll need a lot of energy.
　　Granville: That's why we're taking lots of Kendal mint cake.
　　Hector: I'm not surprised. A lot of expeditions stock up on that before they go.

　　格兰维尔：我们将动身远征，我也差不多准备好了。
　　赫克特：你们准备到哪里去？
　　格兰维尔：我们会去挪威北部两个星期。
　　赫克特：那地方非常险阻难行，你们得花不少力气。
　　格兰维尔：所以我们携带大量肯达尔薄荷饼。
　　赫克特：这不奇怪。不少远征团出发前，都备好大量肯达尔薄荷饼。

　　Kendal mint cake是英国肯达尔市特产，攀山者不少携作干粮，以补充体力，所以赫克特说：A lot of expeditions stock up on that.Stock up是'储备'.要说储备的东西，可用on/with带出；要说储备的用途，则可用for带出，例如：We stocked up on/with firewood for the winter（我们储备木柴，准备过冬）。

　　赫克特又谈到挪威北部：That's pretty tough country.这个country不是之前谈过的'乡间'，也不是'国家'，而是'有某种特色的地方'，例如open country是'旷野'，wooded country是'树木蓊郁的地方'.We traveled over plains and mountainous country即'我们走过平原，走过山区'.留意这个意思的country是不可数名词（uncountable noun），没有复数形式，也不可冠以a字。第二版《朗文当代高级辞典》中英双解本mountainous条下把mountainous country译做'多山国家'，恐怕就是译者误解了。'多山国家'应是a mountainous country.

　　说到'国家'，英文可分为三个字：country、state、nation.Country是指地理上划分的国家，state是指国家的独立政权，nation则是指一个国家的民族，例如：
　　（1） I have been to many Asian countries（我去过不少亚洲国家）。
　　（2） The separation of church and state was achieved about a hundred years ago（政教分离，是大约一百年前的事）。
　　（3） The president told the nation to prepare for war（总统叫国民备战）。
