"I took it as a gift from the school at first, but later I realized it was an ad, after talking to newly recruited students," Hu Liang, from south-west China's Guizhou Province, told the China Youth Daily.
In July, letters of admission from Nankai University, Tianjin, were sent to more than 3,000 students across the country, many of whom were confused by the advertisement items.
"Is my university such a commercially motivated one?"
In response, Zhao Guimin, head of the university's recruitment office, apologized to the students while concurrently contacting the postal department to see what went wrong with the letters.
Reports say all the letters were consigned to Tianjin Post Office through EMS. It was made clear by the school that there was no commercial advertisements attached to the letters, says Zhao Guimin.
"Tianjin Post is a government-owned enterprise, that's why we've had many years of co-operation with them. But obviously they have failed us this time." Zhao was quoted as saying.
Through the postal service, commercial advertisements can be sent to anybody in any form, and at a much lower cost than TV or newspaper media, Tianjin Post Office says on its website.
