　　Liz: Why the long face?
　　Eddie: Well someone told me that Microsoft has announced another security loophole in the Windows operating system and that's the one I've got on my computer.
　　Liz: Windows is a bit like Swiss cheese. But don't worry, you can download a patch to fix it.
　　Eddie: How do I do that?
　　Liz: Click on the “Tools” menu in Internet Explorer and choose the “Windows Update” option. That'll take you to the Microsoft Website.
　　Eddie: What do I do then?
　　Liz: Just follow the instructions they give you. It only takes a couple of minutes.

　　丽丝：用鼠标指向‘国际互联网浏览器’，按出‘工具程序’菜单，选择‘窗口更新’一项，就可进入微软网站。

　　Windows is a bit like Swiss cheese是什么意思呢？原来瑞士干酪表面满是小洞。因此，英文成语to have more holes than Swiss cheese（洞子比瑞士干酪还多）是说法律、论据等处处漏洞，例如：(1) Your argument that smoking is good for one's health has more holes than Swiss cheese（你的‘吸烟有益健康’议论不堪一击）。(2) The accused put up a Swiss-cheese defense（被告的答辩漏洞百出）。
　　计算机词语不少是借用故有词语而引申其义，patch就是一例。这个字本来是指‘补缀用的布片’，作动词是指‘补缀’，例如：(1) There is a patch on the knee of his pants（他裤子膝上打了补钉）。(2) My pants have to patched up（我的裤子要补缀了）。现在，计算机的修补程序就叫patch。Patch也可作动词，例如：(1) This patch will correct the security problem with the Windows operating system（这个修补程序，可解决窗口操作系统的安全问题）。(2) You must update your software regularly to patch security holes（你必须经常更换新软件，以堵塞安全漏洞）。
　　留意software是不可数名词(uncountable noun)，切勿说a software或softwares，例如I loaded some anti-virus software onto the computer（我把防毒软件加载计算机）这一句，some不可改为a。Hardware（硬件）、glassware（玻璃器皿）、ironware（铁器）等，同样是不可数名词。(考试大外语编辑整理)
